Driving Tips
When you get behind the wheel on Maui you'll want to keep in mind:

All occupants of a car must wear seat belts (regardless of age), and children weighing less than 40 pounds must be in a child safety or booster seat.
Right on red is legal unless otherwise marked.
The island's main highway system is easy to understand and well maintained, but expect a steady flow of traffic most of the time. It takes approximately an hour to get from Kahului to Lahaina.
Keep an eye out for trucks and tour buses; they're plentiful and drive fast on narrow roads.
No single road circles the entire island.
Traffic between Kihei and Kahului and Lahaina and Kahului is generally heavy during morning and afternoon rush hours.
If you plan to tackle the famous Hana Highway, check first with your rental company. Some don't allow their vehicles on the 52-mile stretch, which negotiates some 600 curves and passes over 54 bridges. Other companies will void your contract if you take the car past Hana, where the highway becomes even more difficult to negotiate.
