Massive, robotic deep sea giants and a fabulous interactive display of light and color are among the exhibits at the Kauai Children's Discovery Museum, where kids are bound to be entertained, enchanted and yes, even educated, in a fun 'hands-on' world. The museum is in Kapa'a, nestled in the back of the Kauai Village (Safeway) Shopping Center, beneath the Wyland WhaleTower.
The 'deep sea giants' exhibit, which features enormous robotic sea creatures and hands-on learning centers, is intended to explore the deep sea environment from a scientific point of view. Showing simultaneously is Light & Color, a 'behind-the-bulb' look at light and how we see it, using interactive showcases to explore shadow, light and darkness.
These special exhibits are only two of the many attractions at the six-year-old museum, which has assembled exhibits and play areas aimed at challenging and entertaining kids while teaching them more about the world around them.
The museum's Starlight Planetarium, designed by the faculty at MIT, is another hit, showing kids features of the night sky during the day. All exhibits and play areas can be enjoyed for a single admission price of $3.50 per day for children up to 18 and $4.50 for adults.
Kids can also register for half- and full-day keiki camps, in which museum staff provides supervised play and educational opportunities for youngsters between the ages of kindergarten and fourth grade. The Discovery Museum Gift Shop specializes in hard-to-find science and discovery books, activities and toys, making it 'gift central' for the curious child in your life. The museum and gift shop are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 823-8222 for more information.
